Diversity Matters

Powerful women are getting noticed, and not just on the campaign trail. Newsweek’s cover story on Women & Power profiled influential women “in all their glory,”including a record 9 current U.S. state governors. Progressive Grocer featured its first-ever Top Women in Grocery this year, featuring NEW President Helayne Angelus, vice president of Global CBD Diversity for Procter & Gamble, NEW Regional Chair Bobbie O’Hare, vice president of business development for Johnson, O’Hare, and NEW Executive Director Joan Toth, among other NEW members. An article in Grocery Headquarters explored “The Gender Gap,” prominently citing Network members including Angelus, Toth, Trudy Bourgeois, CEO and founder of the Center for Workforce Excellence, Candace Corlett, president of WSL Strategic Retail and Stacy Janiak, vice chairman of retail for Deloitte.

Sweetbay CEO Shelley Broader has been named Retail Executive of the Year by Grocery Headquarters. The magazine cited Broader for leading the smooth conversion of the103-store Kash n’ Karry chain in Florida to the new Sweetbay Supermarket brand.  Grocery HQ called the conversion “a unique accomplishment. Taking a chain of well-established supermarkets and gradually closing their door while simultaneously replacing them with entirely new stores had never been done.” Broader has appeared at NEW networking events in Tampa and is active in the Tampa Bay community. 

NEW and NACS together: The Network of Executive Women co-hosted a reception at the National Association of Convenience Stores show last month in Atlanta. The get-together was arranged by Executive Committee member Mike Gorshe of Accenture and held in the suite of NACS board member Sam Turner, president of the Calfee Co. Turner told the room that the industry needs to develop its the overwhelmingly female c-store workforce. He introduced his wife, business owner Verina Baxter, and Sandy Douglas, president of Coca-Cola North America. Douglas pledged his company’s continued support for the network. NEW board members on hand included Julie Hamilton, Lucia Crater, Kathy Casey and Debbie Wildrick. Key supporters on hand included Mike Salzberg, president of Campbell Sales; Tom Joyce, vice president, customer and industry affairs of the Hershey Company; Dan Vucovich, chief customer officer of Hershey; Joe Burke, vice president, trade relations, at the Coca-Cola Company; Steve Kimmes, CEO of Krause Gentle Corporation, Jinger Duryea, president of CN Brown; Carol Jensen, chief marketing officer of Wawa; other retailers and suppliers and members of the trade media.
