Charlyn Jarrells Porter
Charlyn Jarrells Porter, senior vice president and chief diversity officer for Walmart Stores, will outline how the world's largest retailer is using diversity and inclusion for competitive advantage at NEW's second annual Multicultural Workforce Conference, April 21-23 in Chicago.

“We are excited about this addition to our already powerful program,” said conference facilitator Trudy Bourgeois, CEO and founder of the Center for Workforce Excellence. She said the conference is “designed to engage senior leaders from the dominant work culture, help individuals become champions of diversity, and build intercultural competencies among industry managers.”

The two-day program is targeted at HR managers, diversity and inclusion officers, executives from the CPG/retail industry and emerging leaders. It will feature three keynotes, concurrent sessions, peer learning and best practices panels spotlighting “real-world ideas” from industry executives and diversity and inclusion officers.

Industry all stars

In addition to Porter, the conference will include keynote addresses by John Saguto, vice president of customer development for Nestlé Purina PetCare, and Bridgette Heller, global president of baby care for Johnson & Johnson. Andrés Tapia, chief diversity officer and emerging workforce solutions leader of Hewitt Associates, will give a luncheon address.

The NEW Multicultural Workforce Conference is reserved for a limited number of Network members (memberships are available online for $200 per year). Registration is $995 for employees of NEW’s national corporate sponsor companies and $1,295 for all other NEW members.

All events will be held at the Hyatt Lodge retreat on the McDonald’s Campus in Oak Brook, Illinois, 11 miles from Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport. A discount room rate of $159 is available on a first-come, first-served basis until March 23. Call (630) 990-5800 and mention the NEW Multicultural Workforce Conference.

NEWonline 2.0 works off dynamic web platform

Revamped site part of continuing communications upgrades

The Network of Executive will launch a powerful new website this spring with a host of new networking tools, including enhanced profiles, member messaging, regional group home pages, expanded news and calendar pages and more. The new site will also have new sections devoted to best practices and career development content plus multimedia features that will enable members to collaborate from remote locations.

“NEW is nearly a decade old now and some of our systems and processes are showing their age,” said NEW President Alison K. Paul of Deloitte. “We now have more than 50 national sponsors and 14 regions, when only a few years ago we had half that. We have to ensure that our systems, such as our database, website and business processes, are robust and up-to-date, and this platform will help accomplish that.”

The site is based on a state-of-the-art platform that will be continually upgraded by award-winning membership management solutions provider YourMembership.com, a global provider of online member communities.

NEWonline 2.0 is the result of a comprehensive process led last year by the Network’s information technology committee headed by past president Kimberly Betts and by an online resources committee headed by Executive Committee members Maria Edelson and Debbie Wildrick. The site is part of a continuing communications upgrade that included a new corporate look and logo launched in January.

Carolinas kickoff luncheon a big success

‘Best of the Best’ awards given by New York Metro and Northern California

More than 350 NEW supporters and members gave the Carolinas group a rousing kickoff during a January 21 luncheon at the Omni Hotel in Charlotte. The luncheon was preceded by a networking reception and followed by "Straight Talk from the Top," a panel discussion on leadership led by Fawn Germer, author of the Network’s book, The NEW Woman Rules.

The panel featured Cathy Green, chief operating officer of Food Lion; Bobbie O’Hare, vice president of new business development for Johnson O’Hare Companies; Regenia Stein, vice president of strategy and integrated planning and execution for Kraft Foods; and Tracy Van Bibber, senior vice president of sales for the Dial Corporation.

More than four barrels of school supplies and 168 book bags were donated by the Carolinas regional group to the local YWCA. The YWCA supports more than 300 at risk students ages 5 to 15 across 13 sites in Mecklenburg and Union Counties. The Youth Development Program provides after school programs as well as summer camps 50 weeks out of the year. The program offers children a safe, educational, and fun environment with a variety of activities from tutoring to swimming, arts and crafts.

New York Metro

More than 225 retail and consumer products executives focused on developing leadership skills and building their own personal brands at the Network of Executive Women's New York Metro networking event February 5 in East Rutherford, N.J.  Long-time Network leader Maria Edelson of Procter & Gamble received the “Best of the Best Award” for her service to the New York Metro regional committee during the event.

Lynette Lewis, author of Climbing the Ladder in Stilettos, kicked off the event with a workshop on "Building Your Personal Brand." Attendees worked in groups to assess their current brand and create personal brand strategies using the author's "1-1-1 Strategy" of pursuing one goal by taking one step a week. After a networking reception, Lewis gave a keynote address that expanded on the personal branding topic and included strategies for leveraging social media tools for personal brand building.

Dozens of leading consumer products and retail companies were represented at the event, including Acosta Sales & Marketing, Coca-Cola Enterprises, C&S Wholesaler Grocers, Colgate-Palmolive, Coty, Deloitte, Johnson & Johnson, Procter & Gamble, ShopRite and Unilever. Workshop participant Susan Barry of BPI Brand Marketing said, "I left the workshop with some practical steps to continue to build my company's brand and use the 1-1-1 strategy to pursue my dreams."

Lewis invited attendees to visit www.lynettelewiscommunity.com for a reference guide called "Social Media 101 -- How to Discover and Create Your Brand." Lewis is a sought-after speaker on career development and branding who works around the world. All workshop attendees received a signed copy of her book.

Northern California

Carolyn Belloni, national account manager for PepsiCo, has received the 2008 “best of the best” award for her work on behalf of the Network’s Northern California regional committee. She received the award at the group’s networking breakfast November 11, 2008 in San Ramon.

More than 233 executives from 40 companies attended the breakfast, which focused on the importance of negotiating. The keynote address -- “Fine Tuning Your Negotiation Skills” -- was given by Dr. Deborah Kolb, who is the Deloitte Ellen Gabriel professor for women and leadership at the Simmons School for Management. Eunice Azzani, senior client partner in the San Francisco office of executive recruiter Korn/Ferry, discussed “negotiations in action.” A question-and-answer session followed. “I have attended two of these events and both exceeded my expectations,” one participant commented.

The Northern California group also held a holiday get-together December 12 in Danville, Calif. Thirteen committee members attended the event, which was held at the home of group Co-secretary Lori Proctor of Procter & Gamble.

Northwest Arkansas

A crowd of more than 250 NEW members and supporters heard a leadership panel discuss the question of work/life balance during the region’s networking dinner October 28, 2008 at the Doubletree Hotel in Bentonville, Ark.

Author Fawn Germer moderated the panel, which featured Susan Chambers, executive vice president of people for Wal-Mart Stores; Esther Silver-Parker, senior vice president of corporate affairs Wal-Mart; Maria Quintana, vice president of ethnic sales development for PepsiCo; and Tonie Leatherberry, a principal in the consumer and industrial products practice at Deloitte and Touche. NEW President Alison Paul attended the event and made opening remarks.
