Hundreds network and learn at 2004 NEW Summit Diversity and development focus of Network meeting Network of Executive Women members and supporters converged on the
Embassy Suites O’Hare Airport in Chicago last month for a rollicking
third annual Leadership Summit.
On Wednesday, September 29, more than 230 registrants enjoyed a day of informative
speeches, presentations, break-out sessions and networking events,
including a networking luncheon and “Three Minute Coaching” sessions.
The event began with a three-hour reception in the hotel’s atrium
Tuesday evening, September 28, and was followed by NEW’s Fall Mentoring
Orientation session on Thursday.
The main event started Wednesday morning with a funny and insightful
presentation on work relationships by Connie Podesta. The author of Life Would Be Great – If It Weren’t for OTHER People, (see review in this month’s Books)
asked audience members to classify themselves as “squares,”
“triangles,” “circles” or “squiggles.” Attendees laughed as they
identified with their own and their co-workers’ personality traits, but
Podesta’s presentation had a serious side: How to work in harmony with
co-workers who view life differently.
Other Summit highlights included an enlightening presentation by
Graciela Eleta de Cacho, senior vice president of Multicultural
Development for Procter & Gamble, on “The Changing Face of
America,” and a frank talk on “Diversity Best Practices and Women in
the Workplace” by Working Mother Media CEO Carol Evans.
The morning concluded with a far-ranging panel discussion on the
industry’s future moderated by Chris Hoyt and featuring Shelley
Broader, president and COO of Kash n’ Karry, Pat Curran, senior vice
president of Wal-Mart Stores, P&G’s Graciela Eleta de Cacho, Maria
Fidelibus, vice president, information technology of Quick Chek,
and Janet Langford Kelly of Northwestern University Law School.
Three afternoon breakout sessions were hosted by author Trudy Bouregois
(“Her Corner Office”), Chris Hoyt of Hoyt & Co. (“Is Anyone
Listening to the Changes?”), Dr. Maureen McGuire, McGuire Consulting
Services (“Successful Negotiating”), and David Zahn of Clow/Zahn
Associates (“Effective Practices with Consultants and Third Parties”).
The Summit concluded with remarks by author, consultant and civic
leader Stedman Graham, who told the audience how to build their own
life brand and his own remarkable story, from helping at-risk teens as
founder of “Athletes Against Drugs,” to best-selling author and
consultant helping business executives and others succeed. After his
talk Graham signed copies of his latest book for NEW members.
Energy and enthusiasm
A post-Summit survey showed strong enthusiasm for the event.
Eighty-five percent of the survey respondents said they strongly
agreed that the Summit “met their expectations” (less than 1 percent
disagreed).
Ninety-seven percent agreed the event was useful to their
networking and 78 percent already plan to attend next year. Most
impressive, 97% of respondents said they would recommend the Summit to
others.
NEW President Kimberly Betts, director of Communications for Ahold USA,
emceed the conference and said “the energy of the Summit was palpable.”
She said she was pleased with “the variety of organizations represented
by the conference participants and the seniority they have in their
companies. This is significant as we continue to work on this issue of
career advancement in the industry.”
Joan Toth, NEW’s executive director, thanked NEW’s sponsors and
volunteers who made this event so successful. “Without the help of our
friends and supporters we could not have had this Summit and we could
not have accomplished so much to promote our mission,” Toth said.
Plans are already underway for NEW’s fourth annual Leadership Summit
slated for late September 2005. Stay tuned to NetworkNews and
NEWonline.org for information on the event as it becomes available.

Lynn Martin addresses luncheon at Walton School 400 attend networking event co-sponsored by NEW Former secretary of labor Lynn Martin told a crowd of 400 industry
executives they “are in the middle of an economic revolution that
affects retailing as much as anything else.”
Martin made her remarks at an October 7 luncheon at the Sam M. Walton
College of Business hosted by the University of Arkansas in association
with the Network of Executive Women and sponsored by Deloitte &
Touche. She was introduced to the audience by Chandra Cox, who leads
women’s market initiatives for Wal-Mart.
Megastores and eBay mean “consumers are buying in a whole new way,”
said Martin, a former Illinois congresswoman. “But for most of the
companies in this room, the end consumer is still women, and
increasingly minority.” Because women and minorities play such as
key role in the economy, “diversity has become a business imperative,”
she said.
Martin said retailing has empowered women but suggested the industry
still had a way to go. She said work teams that bring diverse groups
together could be used for strategic advantage. “You must enter into
different worlds to compete in (today’s) marketplace.”
Martin said women consumers want choices, and she urged audience
members to “listen now more than ever. The future has never been
brighter.”

NEW seals show sponsor support Part of Network's new sponsor recognition program The Network of Executive Women is thanking its sponsors with NEW promotions recognizing their support.
This month the Network is distributing “sponsor seals” to its title,
platinum, silver and gold sponsors. The seals feature the NEW logo and
can be used on websites and print materials to promote the companies’
sponsorship of NEW.
Earlier this month the Network unveiled its NEW website, newonline.org,
which prominently displays a scrolling “billboard” featuring logos of
all its sponsors. The site also added links to its sponsors on the
site’s new Corporate Sponsors and Connections pages. The Network will
continue its practice of displaying sponsor logos at association events
and in NEW marketing materials.
“By displaying this seal our sponsors demonstrate their support
of NEW and our mission of diversity and development in the CPG/retail
industry,” said Joan Toth, the Network’s executive director.
“Recognizing our sponsors on our website and outreach materials is the
least we can do to acknowledge their support.”
