Women of color execs face challenges,
but industry has opportunity to change
Corporate life is "a daily battle" for
too many women of color executives – but opportunities for change
exist, according to a presentation by Trudy Bourgeois, founder of the
Center for Workforce Excellence. The presentation was given to more than
forty industry executives on the Network of Executive Women's first-ever
members' call-in teleseminar Friday, July 15.
Bourgeois, a former Brown & Williamson executive
and a NEW board member, pointed out that while women of color are the
fastest growing part of the workforce, they are still "grossly
underrepresented at the senior executive level." She cited "pain
points" identified by African-American women who participated in
NEW's Women of Color initiative last fall. These women described
their corporate experience as lonely, disappointing and unrewarding,
Bourgeois recounted. "Most black women did not feel a genuine partnership
with white women and said that the lack of visible role models placed
additional pressure on first timers."
Seminar participants included representatives from
AXA Advisors, Corporate Talent Resources, Crossmark, CS Americas, Coca-Cola
North America, Daymon, Ecolab, ej4, FMI, Food Lion, Frito-Lay, Gillette,
Grainger, Information Resources Inc., JB Hunt, Kellogg, Mass Connections, Masterfoods,
Meijer, the National Retail Federation, Portland State University, Procter & Gamble,
RJReynolds Tobacco Company, Stop & Shop and
the US Smokeless Tobacco Company. More
