Hundreds focus on diversity and development at 2004 NEW Summit’ Network of Executive Women members and supporters converged on the Embassy Suites O’Hare Airport in Chicago last month for a rollicking third annual Leadership Summit. On Wednesday, September 29, more than 230 registrants enjoyed a day of informative speeches, presentations, break-out sessions and networking events, including a networking luncheon and “Three Minute Coaching” sessions.
The event began with a three-hour reception in the hotel’s atrium Tuesday evening, September 28, and was followed by NEW’s Fall Mentoring Orientation session on Thursday. The main event started Wednesday morning with a funny and insightful presentation on work relationships by Connie Podesta. The author of Life Would Be Great – If It Weren’t for OTHER People, (see review in this month’s Books) asked audience members to classify themselves as “squares,” “triangles,” “circles” or “squiggles.” Attendees laughed as they identified with their own and their co-workers’ personality traits, but Podesta’s presentation had a serious side: How to work in harmony with co-workers who view life differently. Other Summit highlights included an enlightening presentation by Graciela Eleta de Cacho, senior vice president of Multicultural Development for Procter & Gamble, on “The Changing Face of America,” and a frank talk on “Diversity Best Practices and Women in the Workplace” by Working Mother Media CEO Carol Evans. The morning concluded with a far-ranging panel discussion on the industry’s future moderated by Chris Hoyt and featuring Shelley Broader, president and COO of Kash n’ Karry, Pat Curran, senior vice president of Wal-Mart Stores, P&G’s Graciela Eleta de Cacho, Maria Fidelibus, vice president, information technology of Quick Chek, and Janet Langford Kelly of Northwestern University Law School.
